If you have problems to upload images, this is usually a javascript problem. Check your template. Try to use a Joomla default template such as Beez3 and watch if the uploader problems continue. If not, it is a template problem and you should probably change the template.
Some templates come with their own javascript library and overwrite the Joomla libraries.
